Amine Harit has scored in each of Olympique de Marseille’s past two matches, reviving his prospects at club level and potentially putting him back in contention for Morocco under Mohamed Ouahbi.
The 29-year-old followed up his goal in the 2-0 win at Troyes by finding the net again in Sunday’s thrilling 5-2 victory at Angers. Played in by Tochukwu Nnadi, Harit controlled the ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing a powerful right-footed finish into the net.
His strike at Troyes had been his first in Ligue 1 since October 2024.
Harit’s return to prominence was not expected only a few weeks ago. After spending last season on loan at Basaksehir, he came back to Marseille without any guarantee of a place and was regarded as one of the players who could leave.
Bruno Genesio had left open the possibility of reintegrating him in August, but Harit’s opportunities initially appeared limited. Departures, injuries and a lack of depth in the squad subsequently forced Marseille to change their plans.
Like Algeria international Himad Abdelli and several players from the club’s academy, Harit benefited from that situation. He still had to take his opportunity, and did so as a starter against Angers, producing an assured display and showing he can still add invention between the lines.
That revival will need to become more than a short run of form if Harit is to return to the Morocco squad. His career with the Lions de l’Atlas has been marked by promise, interruptions and unsuccessful comebacks.
He was part of Morocco’s squad at the 2018 World Cup but missed the 2022 tournament after suffering a serious knee injury. Harit was used sparingly at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and gradually disappeared from subsequent Morocco squads, with Walid Regragui citing competition for places in his position as one reason for his absence.
Harit’s technical ability has rarely been questioned, but inconsistency has prevented him from becoming an established senior figure for his country.
The injury suffered by Azzedine Ounahi could change the situation. The Panathinaikos midfielder was carried off in the 19th minute of Sunday’s match against Asteras while holding his left thigh.
The exact nature of the injury and the length of Ounahi’s absence remain unknown, although his involvement in Morocco’s November gathering appears to be in doubt.
Ounahi and Harit do not have identical profiles, with the Marseille player naturally more inclined to create in the final third. However, Harit could provide another option in a highly competitive Moroccan midfield.
Two goals will not erase his long period away from the international picture. He has already been given several second chances, and any return will need to be supported by consistency, intensity and a greater contribution without the ball.
For now, Harit is starting matches, influencing results and once again a credible candidate for the Lions.
