Alfadjo Cisse ends 24-year wait for an Italian hat-trick in Europe

Alfadjo Cisse has become the first Italian player in 24 years to score a hat-trick in a European competition after his three-goal performance for Milan against RB Salzburg.

The forward’s display put him at the centre of attention and gave Rossoneri supporters a reminder of the last time an Italian player achieved the feat in a European match.

That player was Filippo Inzaghi, who scored three goals for Milan against Spanish side Deportivo on 24 September 2002.

The match took place during the group stage of the Champions League, with Inzaghi’s hat-trick marking the previous occasion on which an Italian player had scored three times in a European fixture.

Milan went on to win the Champions League that season, securing the trophy for what remains the second-to-last time in the club’s history.
