Semi Ajayi and Hull City came out on top in the battle of the Nigerian internationals as the Tigers secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Coventry City at the CBS Arena, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.
Taiwo Awoniyi led Coventry’s attack and came closest to scoring for the hosts, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis denied his close-range first-half effort. The striker worked hard throughout but struggled to break down a disciplined Hull defence marshalled by Ajayi.
Hull eventually snatched victory in the 82nd minute when Liam Millar finished from Mohamed Belloumi’s pass to preserve the Tigers’ perfect start to their return to the Premier League.
Awoniyi’s effort was among Coventry’s 11 attempts, with only three finding the target, as Hull’s organised defence successfully frustrated the home side.
Frank Onyeka was unavailable for Coventry after being ruled out with a knock.
The result leaves Hull with six points from their opening two matches following their impressive victory over Manchester United on the opening weekend. The Tigers now sit level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
For Coventry, the defeat under Frank Lampard highlights the work still required, particularly in attack, as they continue their long-awaited return to the top flight.
The Nigerian duo will now look ahead to their next fixtures, with Hull hosting Aston Villa at the MKM Stadium, while Coventry will be seeking a response after a frustrating start to life back in the Premier League.
