Achraf Hakimi fitness concern grows ahead of PSG’s Marseille trip

Achraf Hakimi is awaiting the results of medical examinations after leaving Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 Ligue 1 win at Brest with an adductor problem.

The Morocco international tried to continue after going down in the first half but eventually asked to be substituted in the 39th minute. PSG manager Luis Enrique said Hakimi was experiencing discomfort in his adductor, although the extent of the injury will not be known until the tests are completed.

The timing is a concern for PSG, with their trip to Marseille for Le Classique just one week away.

Hakimi’s latest setback follows two injury absences during the 2025-2026 season. According to Transfermarkt’s records, he missed 22 matches: 17 after suffering a serious ankle sprain in November and a further five because of a thigh problem in the spring.

Those injuries kept him out for a combined 80 days, a significant contrast with the player who appeared able to maintain an exceptional level of intensity throughout 2024-2025.

However, that record alone does not justify describing the 27-year-old as “fragile”. His ankle injury was caused by a heavy tackle from Luis Diaz and was different in nature from a muscle problem.

Hakimi’s fitness had already been a subject of concern last season, given the importance of the campaign with Morocco. He faced a race to be fit for the Africa Cup of Nations, before another battle to recover in time for the Champions League final and the FIFA World Cup.

Hakimi’s influence under scrutiny

There have also been questions over whether the interruptions have affected his performances. Hakimi continues to make repeated runs, but his impact in the final third has appeared less consistent than during his 2024-2025 campaign.

L’Equipe reported last week that he had been involved in a decisive action once every 335 minutes in 2026, compared with once every 194 minutes in 2025. It would be premature, however, to attribute that difference solely to his injuries, with changes among PSG’s right-sided partners also affecting his understanding and positioning.

PSG have limited cover in his position before the match against Marseille. Warren Zaire-Emery can fill in on the right, but does not provide all of Hakimi’s attacking qualities.

Morocco manager Mohamed Ouahbi will also be monitoring the examination results. The Lions of the Atlas are due to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Gabon on 25 September and Lesotho on 29 September, followed by high-profile friendlies in early October.

There is currently nothing to confirm that Hakimi will miss any of those fixtures.

Managing the workload of the former Inter Milan player is not a new issue. PSG and Morocco had already introduced a specific programme designed to reduce his injury risk after his heavy schedule of matches for club and country.

Hakimi has not suddenly lost the qualities that make him one of the best players in his position. But after a season interrupted twice by lengthy absences, his latest problem raises the possibility that the player once considered tireless may need a period of rest to recover his full power and precision.

The immediate answer will depend on the medical diagnosis, followed by how PSG and Morocco manage his return.
