Imad Bouchagoura has been included at number 11 in our #TalentsAlgeriens ranking of the 25 young players to watch in the Algerian Ligue 1 this season.
The list is necessarily subjective, taking into account not only a player’s ability, but also their potential, expected role at club level and what the 2026/27 campaign could mean for their development.
Bouchagoura, an attacker with ES Setif, is quiet and reserved away from football. He is shy and can be so introverted that people around him sometimes try to encourage him to mix more with others.
On the pitch, however, he shows a different personality. He does not shy away from physical duels, pressure or important matches.
Imad Bella, a former ES Setif player who is now an agent and was among the first to believe in Bouchagoura’s potential, told Africafoot that the youngster’s confidence is not reflected in how loudly he speaks. It becomes clear when the ball reaches him.
“The pressure from people feeds me,” Bouchagoura says.
Bella recalls quickly seeing qualities in the forward that went beyond his technical ability. That mentality, he believes, is not common among young players.
Born in Sidi Abdelaziz and raised in a modest family environment, Bouchagoura began with JS Djijel before joining ES Setif’s U20 side in 2025. One season was enough to establish him as a player with greater ambitions.
Twenty goals earn senior opportunity
Bouchagoura played a major part in ES Setif U20’s Elite Excellence championship triumph, scoring about 20 goals and becoming one of the most decisive forwards in his age group.
His form inevitably brought him to the attention of the first team. Sofiane Benkhelifa, a coach and youth developer who previously worked with USMA and Olympique Akbou, joined the ES Setif staff with Lotfi Amrouche last season and told Africafoot that the teenager made an immediate impression.
When Bouchagoura was eventually handed opportunities with the senior side towards the end of 2025/26, he did not need long to show his qualities. Benkhelifa went further in his assessment, while Bella believes the attacker’s promotion had become difficult to avoid.
Bouchagoura is not a conventional centre-forward who simply waits for service inside the penalty area. His power and pace allow him to play through the middle, operate from either flank or move deeper into a role resembling a number 10.
Benkhelifa has highlighted his intelligence and vision. Bella, meanwhile, describes a player who does not appear to question whether he is entitled to try something on the pitch.
The forward also took his time when discussions began over his first professional contract. Bella says that caution should not be mistaken for arrogance.
Setback provides another test
His progress has not been entirely straightforward. Bouchagoura had hoped to represent Algeria U21 at the Mediterranean Games but was not selected, a decision which affected him.
Bella tried to help him view the omission differently, using the disappointment as motivation rather than allowing it to become an obstacle.
Bouchagoura was not included in ES Setif’s squad for the opening-day match against Ben Aknoun. A few days later, he returned to the group for the trip to CR Belouizdad, underlining that his permanent transition into senior football is still taking shape.
Bella also sees Bouchagoura’s background as an important source of motivation. An English agency now represents him, while Olympique Akbou and an unnamed Portuguese club showed interest during the summer.
For now, his focus remains ES Setif. His next task is to reproduce at senior level what he achieved with the U20 side by converting opportunities into goals, while the club’s staff must give him enough time to prove he can do so.
