Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba believes the Super Eagles would have produced a different result had George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor started against Guinea-Bissau.
Nigeria were beaten 3-0 by the Djurtus in Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, leaving Eric Chelle’s side with only three points from their opening two matches.
The Super Eagles struggled to impose themselves throughout the match and fell behind before half-time when Franculino Dju opened the scoring. Guinea-Bissau continued to control the contest after the interval, with Mama Balde extending their lead before Alvaro Djalo completed the victory with a third goal deep into stoppage time.
Speaking on SuperSport, Ikpeba criticised Nigeria’s approach and questioned Chelle’s selection decisions against Guinea-Bissau.
“The likes of Akor, Ademola, [and] Awoniyi cannot step up. The young George didn’t start the game. I thought he could have started,” Ikpeba said.
“I thought Moses Usor should have started the game. That fighting spirit that we are wearing the green and whites should be there in their minds.”
Ikpeba also expressed his disappointment at the manner of the defeat, amid increasing pressure from supporters.
“With a population of 250 million, the expectations are exceptionally elevated. The manner in which we surrendered pained me deeply,” the former forward added.
The loss has altered the picture in Group L. Guinea-Bissau now have six points from two matches after following their 3-0 victory over Nigeria with their opening 2-0 win against Tanzania.
Nigeria remain on three points, having begun their campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory against Madagascar. The result against Guinea-Bissau leaves the Super Eagles with significant ground to make up as the qualification campaign continues.
Chelle had remained optimistic after the defeat, insisting that the loss did not mark the end of Nigeria’s hopes. However, Ikpeba’s criticism focused on the team’s lack of response and the decision not to start Ilenikhena and Usor in a match Nigeria ultimately lost heavily.
The Super Eagles’ defeat also leaves them under pressure to improve their performances in the remaining fixtures if they are to strengthen their position in Group L.
