Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has thrown his support behind Stanley Nwabali’s decision to terminate his contract with South African club Chippa United, describing the move as timely and well thought out, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper joined Chippa United from Katsina United in 2022 and went on to establish himself as one of the club’s most reliable performers, making around 70 appearances during his spell in South Africa. His consistent displays also earned him recognition at the international level, where he has grown into Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Reacting to the development, Shorunmu, speaking with Footy Africa, said there could be no better time for Nwabali to seek a new challenge, especially as he looks to develop his career further. The former Africa Cup of Nations winner stressed that the decision would ultimately benefit the goalkeeper if handled correctly.
“It is a good one for himself and for the agent to look for another deal. If he feels this is the right time for him to leave the club, then I will support him,” Shorunmu said.
He also emphasized the importance of securing the right move, one that will help Nwabali grow and consistently perform at a higher level.
“About the deal, it is good for him, and I hope he ends somewhere he can shine and show what he can do. Whichever place he goes, I am sure he will shine and do well, but it depends on him,” he added.
Shorunmu further praised Nwabali’s contribution to Chippa United, noting that the goalkeeper has served the club with distinction and deserves the opportunity to take the next step in his career.
“He has served Chippa United well, and if he feels the time is right for him to move, then that is cool. I hope the agent he is working with can get him a good deal because he is a good goalkeeper and our number one,” Shorunmu concluded.
Nwabali’s next destination is now keenly anticipated, with many believing the Super Eagles’ number one is ready for a bigger stage to further cement his status as one of Nigeria’s top goalkeepers.
