How teams can still qualify from UCL groups

Published on: 02 November 2017

Here's what the teams need to do to seal progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League after they have reached four games.

GROUP A

Man United (12): One point from their remaining two games with FC Basel or CSKA Moscow will be enough. It is still possible, though unlikely, for three teams to finish on 12 points and United be eliminated on goal difference between the teams.

FC Basel (6): Basel hold the head-to-head advantage over CSKA, so in effect they only have to match CSKA's results to take second place. However, if CSKA, Basel and Man United all finish on 12 points, there is the chance Basel could be eliminated on head-to-head goal difference.

CSKA Moscow (6): CSKA will have to better Basel's points haul to be guaranteed of a place in the knockout rounds.

Benfica (0): Need to win their final two games and hope both Basel and CSKA Moscow lose both their matches. That would leave all three teams on six points and places in the Champions League and Europa League would be decided by head-to-head goal difference between the sides, but having been heavily beaten already Benfica are going to need big wins to stay in the competition.

GROUP B

PSG (12): Through. Need four points from their two games to cement top spot. They could even finish top with a loss away to Bayern as long as the German club win by a margin smaller than 3-0, as that would still leave PSG ahead on head-to-head goal difference.

Bayern (9): Through on head-to-head after beating Celtic twice. Will have to win at home to PSG to take top spot.

Celtic (3): Out. Can likely seal a Europa League spot by taking a point against Anderlecht on the final matchday.

Anderlecht (0). Out. Will likely have to win at Celtic to climb above them for a place in the Europa League.

GROUP C

Roma (8): A draw at Atletico Madrid seals their place in the round of 16, and a win in Spain would be good enough to secure top spot if Chelsea do not win at Qarabag.

Chelsea (7): Victory away to Qarabag secures safe passage and would keep them in the hunt for top spot.

Atletico Madrid (3): Must beat Roma (H) and Chelsea (A) to have any hope of staying in the Champions League.

Qarabag (2): Can cause a massive upset by beating Chelsea, but would need a miracle to qualify by beating Roma too and hoping Chelsea lose to Atletico, and that Atletico do not beat Roma.

GROUP D

Barcelona (10): A point from their two games seals progress, and can secure top spot with a draw at Juve in their next match.

Juventus (7): Beat Barcelona and they are through, but anything less and Sporting Lisbon could come back into contention on the final matchday.

Sporting Lisbon (4): Must beat Olympiakos and hope Barcelona beat Juventus. But they won't progress on head-to-head, so need to better Juve's final result too.

Olympiakos (1): Slim hopes if they beat Sporting and Juventus, but they would also need Juve to lose to Barca.

GROUP E

Liverpool (8): Need two points to be sure of a place in the knockout rounds, but could do it on the next matchday with a win over Sevilla.

Sevilla (7): Require four points to be certain of going through.

Spartak Moscow (5): Know they will be through with two wins.

Maribor (1): Must win both of their remaining matches, hope Sevilla lose both and Spartak Moscow do not beat Liverpool. They would also have to beat Sevilla by at least three goals, so only an extremely slim chance.

GROUP F

Manchester City (12): Have qualified and will be guaranteed to top the group should they avoid defeat to Shakhtar.

Shakhtar Donetsk (9): Need a point to go through.

Napoli (3): Must win both of their remaining games, and hope Shakhtar lose to Feyenoord too.

Feyenoord (0): Are out of the UCL, and need to get at least four points from their remaining games to have any chance of the Europa League.

GROUP G

Besiktas (10): Need a point to go through, and two points to top the group.

FC Porto (6): Require four points to guarantee a top two finish.

RB Leipzig (4): Will likely have to win both of their remaining games to have a chance with FC Porto winning the head to head between the teams, and then hope FC Porto pick up no more than three points.

AS Monaco (2): Have to win both of their matches to have a chance of squeezing into the knockout rounds.

GROUP H

Tottenham (10): Are already through and need three points to secure top spot.

Real Madrid (7): Need two points to make sure of second place.

Borussia Dortmund (2): Must win both of their remaining games and hope Real Madrid pick up no more than a point. They would also need to turn around the 3-1 head-to-head deficit with Madrid if both teams finish level on eight points.

Apoel Nicosia (2): Like BVB, must win both of their remaining games and hope Real Madrid pick up no more than a point. Their head-to-head deficit with Madrid is 3-0 if they finish level.
