Roma scored twice in the closing stages to overturn Atalanta’s lead and claim a 2-1 home victory in the third round of Serie A.
The result keeps Roma’s perfect start to the campaign intact, with the capital club now having taken nine points from their opening three matches. Atalanta leave Rome with six points after suffering a defeat despite leading early in the second half.
Roma had been regarded as the favourites before kick-off, but Atalanta produced the stronger performance during the opening 45 minutes. The visitors from Bergamo defended effectively and kept their hosts from finding a way through before the interval.
The match changed shortly after the restart. Atalanta moved in front when Ederson found the target with a well-directed effort, putting Roma under immediate pressure and forcing the home side to respond.
Roma needed to recover quickly, but Atalanta’s advantage remained intact for much of the second half. The hosts continued to search for an equaliser as the game moved towards its final stages, with the visitors appearing close to securing a valuable away result.
That changed in the 90th minute, when Mario Hermoso restored parity for Roma. His goal gave the home side renewed momentum and set up a frantic finish at Stadio Olimpico.
Roma then completed the turnaround during stoppage time. Matias Soule scored the decisive goal to give the hosts a 2-1 victory and send them from a losing position to all three points.
The late recovery means Roma have won each of their three Serie A fixtures so far. Their latest success was particularly significant because they had spent most of the match trailing after Atalanta’s second-half opener.
For Atalanta, the defeat ends a match in which they had controlled the first half and held the lead after the interval. Despite those efforts, they were unable to protect their advantage once Roma found an equaliser in the final minute of normal time.
Roma’s two late goals ultimately settled a contest that had appeared to be heading Atalanta’s way. Hermoso’s strike levelled the score, before Soule produced the final decisive moment in added time to complete the home side’s comeback.
