Former Hearts of Oak chairman Harry Zakkour has given a surprise ringing endorsement of Kwesi Nyantakyi to stay on as the president of the Ghana FA, urging rumoured candidates Randy Abbey and Fred Pappoe to 'wait for their turn'.
Zakkour, who was an arch critic of Nyantakyi just eight months ago, says the lawyer has excelled in his rein as the president of the country's football governing and must be supported to stay in power to continue with his agenda.
The popular former Hearts of Oak administrator says Nyantakyi's progress at CAF must also be seen by as the opportunity for more Ghanaians to be supported to be key members of Africa's governing body as he has already 'pushed' nine of his compatriots on serve on various committees of the continental body.
Nyantakyi will be seeking another term in office later this year having presided over the GFA for the past ten years as he recently retained his CAF Executive Committee position unopposed.
Zakkour who was in a recent verbal brawl with the GFA capo has surprisingly endorsed Nyantakyi for the upcoming elections – saying he has done a good job enough to retain his presidency.
“I think he [Kwesi Nyantakyo] is doing well,” Zakkour told Radio Gold.
“I used to fight him but I think he is doing well and I will give him the support as GFA boss. He is working hard.
"He recently won his CAF elections and I want to congratulate him and encourage him to work hard and take Ghana to another World Cup," the ex-Hearts chief said.
Abbey has also been rumoured to be interested in contesting but the former GFA spokesman has denied any interest while Pappoe is seen as another formidable candidate even though both have not publicly declared any intentions of contesting.
“At the moment I think it is too early for anyone to contest him," Zakkour opined who worked with both Abbey and Pappoe at Hearts and Olympics respectively.
“People like Randy Abbey and Papsay [Fred Pappoe] should get involved and get themselves ready to take over in the future.”
Some relatively unknown persons like Ofeibea Ramatu and Eric Opoku have declared their interest in running against the incumbent.
Serial challenger Vincent Sowah-Odotei appears to have pulled out to concentrate more on his bid to become a Member of Parliament.
