Harry Redknapp: England Must Reach Euro Quarters, No Other Squad Is as Good as Ours

Published on: 01 June 2016

"?Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp believes that England have the potential to be a "real force" at Euro 2016 this summer, stating that anything less than a quarter-final place would be a "disaster" and cause for Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson to walk away.

"I think we have a great chance and it will be fantastic squad of players and I don't see why we will not be a real force in this tournament," Redknapp commented when quizzed by Betsafe.

"If England don't make the quarter-finals I think that it will be a disaster," he added.

"I don't fear anybody with that squad [England have got]. I think it's a fantastic group of players, young players, good players. I don't see anyone with a squad as good as us, I think we've got every chance this year."

Hodgson's team find themselves in a group with Wales, Russia and Slovakia and Redknapp has also backed Wales to progress to the knock-out rounds, while he thinks that England should, at the very least, win in the last 16 to move on to the final eight.

If that isn't the case, Hodgson may well find his job under serious threat.

"I think Roy would get a lot grief if we don't make it to quarter-finals," Redknapp went on to say.

"I mean, he would know that it's time to move on. He is a great guy and I like Roy very much. I think he's got a squad there that will go all the way. But certainly, if we don't make it to the quarter-finals, I think that he will hold his hands up and move on."

What starting XI Hodgson will select when England finally begin their campaign on 10th June against Russia has been a real talking point in recent weeks, with a numerous player in the squad all staking a serious claim for a place.

For Redknapp, a 4-4-2 diamond is the best way to fit all the key players in, with Joe Hart in goal and a back four of Kyle Walker, Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill and Danny Rose.

"[Hodgson] could go with a diamond and play with three midfield players and (Wayne) Rooney in behind (Jamie) Vardy and (Harry) Kane which is quite exciting," the ex-Spurs boss suggested.

"I would play (Eric) Dier, Dele Alli and (Ross) Barkley. I would have a go at a very attacking team, people would say it's a very open team but I think it's a team that could cause big problems."
