Harry Kane scored his first Bundesliga goal of the season as Bayern Munich maintained their unbeaten start with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Elversberg.
The result means Bayern have avoided defeat in all six of their matches in all competitions this season, winning five and drawing one.
Elversberg, playing their first-ever Bundesliga campaign, had begun the season with consecutive victories and showed no sign of being overawed during a lively opening at Waldstadion Kaiserlinde.
Bayern provided an early reminder of their attacking threat when Lennart Karl tested Nicolas Kristof from distance after combining neatly with Kane.
The visitors took the lead shortly before the half-hour mark. Ismael Saibari’s low delivery travelled across the area to the far post, where Karl arrived to guide the ball in from close range.
Elversberg thought they had been given a route back into the match when Aleksandar Pavlovic’s misplaced header allowed Cole Campbell to fire past Jonas Urbig. However, an offside infringement ruled out the goal and spared Pavlovic’s mistake.
Campbell was substituted soon afterwards, making way for Maurice Krattenmacher, who joined Elversberg from Bayern in the summer.
The 21-year-old needed just over 15 minutes to make an impact against his former club. His equaliser came only moments after a Kane effort had been disallowed for offside.
Krattenmacher was allowed time and space on the edge of the penalty area before shifting the ball onto his right foot. He then created the angle for a superb curling finish into the top corner, leaving Urbig with no chance.
The setback prompted an immediate response from Bayern. Michael Olise saw one effort cleared off the line before attempting to lob Kristof with another shot that looped on to the crossbar.
It was Kane, rather than Olise, who eventually restored Bayern’s advantage and secured his side’s fourth competitive goal of the season.
The England captain received possession in a crowded area, using two calm touches to create room for a shot which beat Kristof at the near post.
Kane’s 72nd-minute finish settled the first competitive meeting between the clubs. The victory lifted Vincent Kompany’s side into fourth place, while Elversberg dropped to sixth.
