Harrison Afful scored in the 4-0 win for Esperance

Hearts of Oak were left with a steep mountain to climb in the CAF Confederation Cup as they were thrashed 4-0 by Esperance in a game that saw Ghanaian defender Harrison Afful also get on the scoresheet.

The Phobians looked very nervy in the opening minutes of the game – committing several blunders in their half of the pitch with misplaced passes and the Tunsian giants took full advantage.

Goalkeeper Abdoulaye Soulama was on these several occasions on hand to prevent an early concession.

The impressive Burkina Faso goalkeeper however couldn’t stop the opening strike by Samuel Eduok who outmuscled Robin Gnagne off the ball before tapping in in the 12th minute.

The shell-shocked Phobians now had to come out fighting but still couldn’t find their rhythm with their passing as the Tunisians kept running at the fragile Hearts defence.

Samuel Eduok should have scored his second midway through the half but miscued a lovely cut-back by Harrison Afful - who was deployed in midfield - for Soulama to pick up the loose ball.

Hearts finally got their break when Isaac Mensah was played in-behind the Esperance defence but the swift winger was flagged offside.

Foovi Aguidi had a glorious opportunity to draw Hearts level two minutes into the second half after a cross met him in space.

His resultant header was however too feeble to trouble goalkeeper Ben Cherifia.

Hearts almost suffered from that miss as Samuel Eduok profited from an over the top ball in a counter move but the Nigerian striker blasted wide at close range with only on-rushing goalkeeper Soulama to beat.

The Phobians were growing in confidence but this was deflated in the 58th minute when Samuel Eduok grabbed his brace with a neat finish.

Harrison Afful then made it three for the hosts with a strike that took a deflection on its way in.

The Ghanaian defender refused to celebrate his goal.

Ghilane Chaalali then made it four for Esperance with 10 minutes left to play.

The resounding result thus means Hearts must win by the same margin or even better in the return leg in Accra to progress to the group stage of the competition.

You run your club like a village cultural group yet you want to compete with clubs that run and have structures like Madrid and Barcelona. There is no magic in this world. You will only get the results you work for.

this is just sad. I think GFA needs to find someways to let the clubs get some more matches from abroad. Hopefully they will learn from others across the globe.

Continental Club Masters indeed. Not even Local District Club Heroes. Mounting big, undeserved names is what fans take pride in. TP Mazembe & the like could assume such accolades as CCM & not Hearts. Useless team. Doesn't even have a football field for the club. Does training on others parks. CCM? Self deception. The Esperance results show. The performance of Hearts in the local league shows. REVAMP THE POOR MANAGEMENT & LET US HOPE SOMETHING GOOD WILL COME OUT OF THIS DISGRACE. This is a disaster, a Tsunami has hit the club. From top to bottom, the blame should be shared equally.

Herbert Addo has done well but he should have gone there defending. The players left the defense thin.I blame the coach. His strategy didn't work.

Where is Mohammed Polo....make he cam take credit for this defeat jux as he wanted to take credit for hearts' victories...Shameless man ...All de same, this Esperance team is too experienced, with too many internationals...das wat u get when u invest money in purchasing good players and paying them well...Hearts of Oak,should strive to win de 2nd leg at all cost....it will take a conversion rate of close to 100% to see de phobians score 5 unanswered goals....I jux can't see these hearts players demonstrate such efficiency in front of goal....

The CAF Confederation Cup and CAF Champions league competition are not for jokers - Our league is for jokers. We need to improve otherwise it is better to forget it. The Fobians have done their best. It is not surprising that our best reps (Kotoko and Hearts) from the mediocre league could not find their feet among the best. If our league should continue to produce this same standard of performance, nobody should expect any miracle. Even Jose Morenho will not be able to help.
