The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has once again reaffirmed its commitment to the August 22, 2025, kick-off date for the new Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, while speaking in Abuja during the Nigeria National League (NNL) Monthly Merit Awards for April and May 2025, praised the NPFL leadership for successfully concluding the 2024/2025 season promptly.
"Just last week, the NPFL officially announced August 22, 2025, as the kick-off date for the new league season. I want to assure everyone that, by the grace of God and if we are all alive, the Nigeria Premier Football League will indeed commence on that date,” Gusau stated.
He attributed the recent improvements in the league to deliberate and collective efforts by key stakeholders aimed at overhauling and reforming domestic football structures.
"The positive changes we’re witnessing in our leagues are results of joint decisions taken by the leadership of our football bodies to reform our system and bring it in line with global best practices. We’re working hard to ensure our football regains its rightful place in Africa and the world," he added.
The NFF president also revealed ongoing efforts to improve officiating standards in the country. According to him, the Federation is currently identifying the best 20 young referees across the nation, with plans to expose them to advanced training under top officials from FIFA and CAF.
“We’re not stopping at just administrative reforms. We are also engaging actively with our referees. I’ve spoken with those in charge and requested the selection of the best 20 young referees. We will invite elite FIFA and CAF officials to train and mentor them. In a few years, the impact of these efforts will be evident,” Gusau concluded.
The NFF’s renewed assurance further reinforces its commitment to strengthening the NPFL and ensuring it remains competitive, credible, and professionally run, in line with international standards.
