Venezia FC is pleased to announce the signing of United States international midfielder Gianluca Busio, 19, from Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer.
Originally from North Carolina, Busio signed an MLS Homegrown Player contract with Sporting KC at age 15, making him the second-youngest player in MLS history. Since his MLS debut in July 2018, Busio went on to make 70 total appearances with 8 goals and 9 assists for Sporting KC in all competitions over the last four seasons, establishing himself as one of the most exciting talents in American soccer.
After a breakout season in 2019, Busio became a regular starter in 2020, helping SKC finish first in the MLS Western Conference during the regular season. In the ongoing 2021 season, Busio made 13 starts with two goals and three assists and led the team in minutes (1,152), chances created (20), tackles won (22), duels won (76) and recoveries (97). His free-kick goal against Houston on 29 May was voted AT&T MLS Goal of the Week.
At international level, Busio earned his first cap for the senior national team last month in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and went on to make six total appearances in the tournament, including a substitute appearance in the final against Mexico, helping the United States win the competition for the seventh time. Busio had previously represented the United States at the Under-15, Under-17, and Under-20 levels, including three appearances at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
