The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has welcomed the decision by Tanink Ghana Ltd to donate Grand Cherokee Jeeps to the Black Stars for their heroics at the recent Africa Cup of Nations but insists that it has not received the vehicles yet.
The Chief Executive Officer of Tanink Ghana Ltd, franchise holders of Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Iveco, etc in Ghana, revealed on Wednesday morning that they have agreed to donate Grand Cherokee Jeeps to the Black Stars for finishing second at the tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
News broke out yesterday claiming that the Black Stars have already received the vehicles with some claiming it is government who has bought the vehicles for the national team players.
However, Mr. Roger Klogo, CEO of Tanink said the donation was a redemption of a long-standing promise made by Tanink Ghana Ltd to the Black Stars and has nothing to do with government.
According to him, he had promised the Chairman of the Ghana Football Association ahead of the 2014 World Cup during the trial match between the stars and Holland that if the Stars were to qualify to the semi-final stage of the competition, he would donate cars to all the players.
He was one of 30 Chief Executives sponsored by KLM to Holland to watch the Black Stars' friendly match against Holland.
The GFA says even though it has not received the vehicles yet, it welcomes the decision by the company to donate the SUVs to players of the national team.
"We have not yet received any official communication about this yet. If Tanink want to donate this to the team we will gladly receive it and encourage other companies to emulate them," Ghana FA spokesman Sannie Daara said.
