Ghana FA Ethics Committee chairman Nana Agyei Ampofo has relinquished his position to allow investigations into a bribery case against his club Unity FC.
Ampofo’s club is alleged to have paid referees Alex Akugre, Theophilus Akugre, Paul Aduko and Joshua Noah to fix a Division One League match.
According to a Ghana FA charge, a club official of Unity FC called Nii Lokko, demanded an amount of Three Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc3000.00) from the match officials and accused them of failing to “help” them win against Bofoakwa Tano in a match played on 29 April.
Nii Lokko is alleged to have said that he suspects that the away club gave the match officials more money and they returned the said amount to Nii Lokko in violation of the GFA Regulations.
The Ethics Committee is expected to sit on the matter but the chairman Nana Ampofo cannot be at post because of conflict of interest.
He told Accra-based Atinka FM: "I cannot still hold the position because I have read on the GFA site that someone within my club paid a bribe to referees to officiate a game in our favour.
"I have decided to step aside as the chairman of the ethics committee so that a good investigation can be conducted into the matter.
"I have not received any official letter from the quarters of the GFA though but I think this is the best decision, and I also want to confirm that the said person is not an official of my club but I said, I have decided to step down from the position so that they conduct a thorough investigation"
