Ghana FA demands FIFA, UEFA action over Emmanuel Frimpong racist abuse in Russia
Emmanuel Frimpong was racially abused in Russia

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has demanded action from FIFA and UEFA over the racist abuse suffered by its Russia-based midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong insisting only a strong action from the governing bodies will dissuade fans from targeting black footballers in Russia.

Former Arsenal player Frimpong was sent off playing for Russian side FC Ufa after he gestured to the crowd with his middle finger in response to monkey chants on Friday night.

The midfielder, 23, was playing away to Spartak Moscow in the opening game of the Russian Premier League season.

The decision to send Frimpong off while the racists have been left unpunished is what has led the GFA to demand action from football's governing bodies.

"As this incident occurred within a stadium in Russia, it is within the Russian Football Union, UEFA and FIFA's remit to act," the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said in a statement on Sunday.

"It is a matter for all the concerned football authorities to investigate the incident further and the culprits brought to justice as soon as possible.

"The GFA wants the football authorities to act by sending a strong signal to the racists who abused Emmanuel Frimpong on Friday that there is no complacency about dealing with the scourge of racism in football across the globe."

The GFA said the lack of action by football's governing bodies will further embolden racist fans in Russia to continue to attack black and African footballers.

"The fight against racism and discrimination in football is taking root and it cannot be turned back by the nonchalance of those football authorities who are not keen on rooting out this evil that shames our game and human dignity," the GFA added.

Frimpong was shown the red card after half an hour of the game in Moscow, with the score at 1-1.

He wrote on Twitter after the match: "A human being shouldn't be racially abused for the game that I love. I'm going to serve a sentence for being abused."

But the apparent lack of desire by the Russian federation to punish the perpetrators and UFA's decision to rather criticize the Ghana star is what has angered the GFA.

Ufa general director Shamil Gazizov said his club would not be calling for Spartak to be punished, describing it as an "unfortunate incident".

"There were people who could have shouted things. These are emotions which go away after the game. We are partners with the red and whites and are on good terms," he said.

"What Frimpong did was wrong. Sometimes you even have to hold back the tears and just put up with it."

Russia hosts the next World Cup in 2018, and Frimpong added: "Abused... and yet we going to hold a World Cup in this country where Africans will have to come play football."

Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure, who has been racially abused while playing in Russia in the Champions League, has previously said black players might boycott the World Cup unless the country tackles racism in football.

Last season, Dynamo Moscow's Congolese defender Christopher Samba was banned for two matches for gesturing to fans following racist abuse.

There have been more than 200 cases of discriminatory behaviour linked to Russian football over the past two seasons.

But in March former head of Russian football Vyacheslav Koloskov said too much is made of racism in the country and has also questioned why monkey chants are assumed to be racist.

Listen to this shit: Ufa general director Shamil Gazizov said his club would not be calling for Spartak to be punished, describing it as an “unfortunate incident”. “What Frimpong did was wrong. Sometimes you even have to hold back the tears and just put up with it". Can't believe this from the sporting director. He should be sacked straight away.
