Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi has confirmed moves to have Asamoah Gyan rescind his decision to no longer take penalty kicks for the Black Stars.
Gyan claims his decision is in fulfillment of a promise made to his late mother having been vilified for two big misses.
The 29-year-old blew a grand opportunity to qualify Ghana as the first African country to make the semi finals of the World Cup by missing a late spot kick against Uruguay in the 2010 finals.
The Black Stars eventually lost the shootouts against the South American side.
Gyan again missed a penalty in Ghana’s semi final defeat in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Al Ain ace on both occasions was vilified by sections of the Ghanaian public – some going overboard to attack Gyan’s personality and his family.
He thus took a decision to stay away from spot kicks when with the Black Stars despite proving his efficiency in his continued penalty-taking duties at club level.
But Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi says his outfit are making frantic efforts to have this decision reversed in the wake of Ghana’s penalty shootout loss against Cote d’Ivoire in the finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
“We all know Asamoah Gyan is one of the best penalty takers in the Black Stars team,” Kwesi Nyantakyi told Hot FM.
“He however decided not to take penalties again because of what happened but we are making efforts to convince him to rescind this decision.
“There is no guarantee he will rescind his decision but we are pursuing the matter.
“We need to say positive things about our players to always encourage them to do well for the team.”
Andre Ayew has since been an effective first choice penalty taker for the Black Stars ever since Gyan ceded that role.
