Genoa stun Juventus to extend visitors’ poor Serie A start

Genoa produced one of their most impressive performances of the season to beat Juventus 2-0 at Stadio Luigi Ferraris and record a fourth consecutive home win in all competitions.

The victory ended the Rossoblu’s six-match winless head-to-head run against Juventus and moved them five points clear of the relegation zone.

Genoa made the stronger start, having also scored early in their 1-0 victory over Venezia at the weekend. They immediately put pressure on the Bianconeri defence and took the lead after 12 minutes.

Tommaso Baldanzi’s low cross from the left found Kingsley Ehizibue inside the penalty area, and his effort reached the net after taking a substantial deflection off Andrea Cambiaso.

Daniele De Rossi’s side maintained their momentum and added a second goal before the half-hour mark, with another deflected finish punishing Juventus.

A long ball from the hosts caused confusion when Pape Matar Sarr failed to clear. Vitinha then burst into the penalty area, and after the ball came loose it fell to Baldanzi, who finished from close range. His shot beat Guglielmo Vicario after deflecting off Gleison Bremer.

Juventus had a major opportunity to reduce the deficit just before half-time, but Pierre Kalulu was unable to convert when presented with a clear chance.

Luciano Spalletti’s side returned for the second half with greater urgency, although Genoa continued to threaten whenever they broke forward.

Leo Ostigard sent a header narrowly over the crossbar within the first 15 minutes after the restart, while Vitinha missed another promising opportunity. He lacked composure when presented with a chance and struck his effort well wide.

Juventus increased the tempo again midway through the second half and came close to finding a way back into the match. Bremer’s header from a corner flew inches over the bar, summing up an increasingly frustrating evening for the visitors.

Despite their improved approach after the interval, Juventus lacked the quality required in the final third to mount a comeback. Genoa controlled the closing stages and secured a statement victory.

The result leaves Juventus eighth in the Serie A table after a third defeat in the competition this season. The pressure on Spalletti will increase before Juventus meet his former club Napoli at the weekend.

Johan Vasquez was named Flashscore Man of the Match for Genoa.
