Stephan El Shaarawy will continue his career with Genoa after completing a move to the Serie A club as a free agent.
The 33-year-old Italy international has joined the Genoa squad following the end of his contract with Roma. The transfer was confirmed by the club’s press service, making Genoa the latest destination in the experienced attacking midfielder’s career.
El Shaarawy left Roma when his employment agreement with the capital club expired. No transfer fee was involved in his move to Genoa because he was out of contract.
His arrival comes as Genoa look to improve their position after a difficult opening to the new Serie A season. The club have lost their first two matches and currently sit 16th in the league table.
Genoa’s next fixture is at home against Como on Friday, 4 September. El Shaarawy’s signing has been completed before that match, with the club’s announcement confirming that he is now officially part of the Genoese side.
The move gives El Shaarawy an opportunity to continue playing in Italy after his spell with Roma came to an end. He had most recently represented the Rome-based club, but will now begin the next stage of his career with Genoa.
For Genoa, the agreement represents the addition of an experienced Italian attacking midfielder to a squad attempting to recover from consecutive defeats. The club’s early results have left them 16th, increasing the importance of their upcoming home meeting with Como.
El Shaarawy’s transfer was announced without details of the length of his new contract. The key information confirmed by Genoa is that the player has signed as a free agent and will continue his career at the club.
The fixture with Como, scheduled for Friday, 4 September, will be Genoa’s next chance to collect points in Serie A after their unsuccessful start. Their two defeats have placed them in the lower part of the standings, while El Shaarawy’s arrival provides the latest development around the club before that home match.
