GATTUSO: "WE WENT UP A GEAR IN THE SECOND HALF"

Gennaro Gattuso praised his Napoli team for their second-half performance against Benevento on Sunday afternoon as they fought back from a goal down to secure another three points in Serie A TIM.

“We did well to fight back – it was a good performance,” said Gattuso, speaking after the game.  “It wasn’t an easy game and it got harder after their goal. But we upped the tempo in the second half and were able to control the game and score two goals.”

Andrea Petagna scored the winner for the Azzurri just nine minutes after coming off the bench, and Gattuso had warm words for the striker after the match.

“I sent Petagna on because I know how much progress he’s making physically and I know how hard he’s been working,” said the coach. “We needed more power in the box, plus he’s great at linking the play up.”

Gattuso acknowledged that Benevento’s style and system made life difficult for his team on Sunday.

“We didn’t find the space today but that’s because there wasn’t any,” he admitted. “Benevento kept things tight and played with organisation, so we had to play wider – something we did in the second half especially.

“We had good positioning in the first half but our possession was a bit blunt. We needed to speed up our passing game and be more incisive. As the minutes passed, we grew into it and did well to get ourselves ahead.”
