Gian Piero Gasperini has become only the third manager in Roma’s history to oversee a run of at least eight consecutive Serie A victories after his side beat Atalanta in the third round of the Italian league season.
Roma’s latest success extended their winning sequence to eight matches in total. Five of those victories came at the end of last season, while the remaining three have been recorded at the start of the current campaign.
The achievement places Gasperini alongside Luciano Spalletti and Rudi Garcia, the only other Roma managers to guide the club to eight or more successive Serie A wins.
Spalletti’s best run came in the 2005-06 season, when Roma won 11 league matches in a row. He repeated an eight-game winning sequence in 2016.
Garcia also recorded multiple extended runs during his time in charge. Roma won 11 consecutive Serie A matches in 2013, before putting together another run of nine victories in 2014.
Gasperini’s latest milestone was secured with the victory over Atalanta, who were beaten by Roma in the third round of this season’s Italian championship. The result maintained the club’s perfect start to the campaign and added to the five-match winning finish that had preceded it.
The combined sequence means Roma have now won every one of their past eight Serie A fixtures, a stretch that began during the closing stages of the previous season and has continued into the new one.
Although the run is still shorter than the 11-match records achieved by Spalletti and Garcia, Gasperini has moved into a select group of Roma managers associated with the club’s longest league winning streaks.
Roma will attempt to extend the sequence in their next Serie A fixture, when they travel to face Torino. That match will give Gasperini the opportunity to move beyond an eight-game run and further distinguish his record among the club’s most successful league starts and finishes.
The victory against Atalanta was therefore significant on two levels: it preserved Roma’s unbeaten winning sequence across the end of last season and the opening three rounds of this campaign, while also adding Gasperini’s name to a short list of managers who have achieved a comparable feat in Serie A with the club.
Spalletti remains the holder of the longest individual sequence listed in the club’s record, with 11 consecutive victories in 2005-06. Garcia matched that total in 2013. Both managers later produced further runs of at least eight wins, but Gasperini is now the third coach to reach that mark with Roma.
