The FIFA U-17 World Cup has provided an early stage for some of football’s most recognisable future stars, with Victor Osimhen holding the record for the most goals scored in a single edition since the tournament began in 1985.
The Nigeria striker scored 10 times at the 2015 tournament in Chile, a total that remains unmatched. Although Nigeria did not win that edition, Osimhen’s performances established him as one of the competition’s outstanding individual players.
Osimhen, now a striker for Galatasaray, has continued to confirm the promise he showed at youth level. His record stands at the top of a scoring roll of honour that includes players from Africa, Europe and elsewhere who made a significant impact at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Before Osimhen set the benchmark, two players had shared the record with nine goals apiece.
Souleymane Coulibaly reached that total for Cote d’Ivoire at the 2011 tournament in Mexico, while Florent Sinama-Pongolle scored nine for France at the 2001 edition in New Zealand. Both came within one goal of Osimhen’s eventual mark.
The record had first been set during the inaugural tournament in 1985, held in China. Germany’s Marcel Witeczek scored eight goals at that competition, putting his name among the most prolific scorers in the history of the event.
The African influence on the tournament’s scoring charts is particularly notable. Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria have all produced players who finished among the leading scorers at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, underlining the strength of the continent’s youth football.
The list also includes several players who went on to become familiar names in the European game. Cesc Fabregas featured among the leading scorers in 2003, while Macauley Chrisantus did the same in 2007. Wilson Oruma is also part of the tournament’s scoring roll of honour after his appearance in 1993.
Borja Baston is another name associated with the competition’s notable goalscorers. Together with Osimhen, Chrisantus, Fabregas, Oruma, Witeczek, Coulibaly and Sinama-Pongolle, he forms part of a group whose performances at youth level helped draw attention to their emerging talent.
Since its first edition in 1985, the FIFA U-17 World Cup has repeatedly served as a platform for players who later commanded attention on the senior stage. Witeczek’s eight goals set an early standard, while Coulibaly and Sinama-Pongolle moved the mark to nine before Osimhen produced his record-breaking 10-goal campaign in Chile in 2015.
