Frank Onyeka Faces Late Fitness Test Ahead of Aston Villa Clash

Frank Onyeka is a doubt for Coventry City’s Carabao Cup third-round meeting with Aston Villa after picking up an injury in their heavy defeat to Brighton, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The Nigeria international was forced to leave the pitch during Coventry’s 5-0 loss at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

Onyeka was replaced by Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi with 18 minutes left to play, leaving his availability for Wednesday’s cup fixture uncertain.

The 28-year-old is expected to undergo a late fitness assessment as Coventry’s medical team determines whether he is fit enough to feature against Villa.

Coventry will already be without Onyeka’s Super Eagles teammate Taiwo Awoniyi, who is suspended following his red card in the Brighton defeat.

Awoniyi was shown a straight red card in the 53rd minute and will therefore sit out the trip to Villa Park.

Lampard’s squad has also been hit by further absences, with Josh Eccles, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Luke Woolfenden and Haji Wright all set to miss the cup encounter.

The Sky Blues have endured a difficult opening to the campaign, managing just one victory from five matches across all competitions.

Lampard will now hope Onyeka can prove his fitness in time to provide some much-needed experience and defensive strength against Aston Villa.
