Former Arsenal Defender Believes Spurs Defensive Duo Are Currently Best Players in the League

Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes the early season form shown by Spurs duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld is the best from anyone in the Premier League so far, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Belgium internationals have forged a formidable partnership at the centre of Spurs' back four and have so far this season only conceded three goals in seven matches, which has helped guide them to second in the Premier League.

Spurs also had the best defensive record - along with Manchester United - last season, propelling Mauricio Pochettino's side to third place in the Premier League.

Keown, who was a part of Arsenal's 'Invincible' side in the 2003/04 season, has hailed the pair's partnership and believes they have remained as consistent as they were last season.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, the former England international said: "I have also been very impressed by Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen at Tottenham.

"Sometimes with defenders you want to talk about partnerships rather than individuals and these two look very solid, as they did last season."

Keown also praised Arsenal's current centre-back pairing in Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi but stopped short of hailing them as the Gunners' best pairing since Arsene Wenger's 'Invincibles' twelve years ago.

"It's far too early to say if they are the best since the Invincibles but it looks like a very good, promising partnership," Keown added.

"I like the way Mustafi organises himself. He is very good at slowing down his opponent, quick to get into position and reacts to danger quickly. He has a no-nonsense approach. He is also not selfish - he wants to help his partner."
