Folarin Balogun has been left out of Monaco’s squad for the league phase of the Conference League after his proposed move to Everton collapsed.
The 25-year-old American striker will also miss Monaco’s Ligue 1 match against Paris Saint-Germain on 4 September, ESPN reports.
Balogun has returned to first-team training but has not played for Monaco at any stage this season. His exclusion from the club’s European squad follows the failure of his proposed transfer to Everton on the final day of the summer transfer window.
The forward had been close to joining the English club in a deal worth 46.5 million euros. However, Balogun pulled out after Everton raised concerns about his fitness following his medical examination.
His future at Monaco remains uncertain, with the French club still hoping to sell him. Monaco need to raise funds to meet the financial requirements imposed by the French league, and Balogun’s departure remains one possible way of doing so.
The club’s options could include a move to Saudi Arabia, where the transfer window remains open until 12 October.
Balogun’s absence from both Monaco’s Conference League squad and the team for the meeting with Paris Saint-Germain means he remains without a competitive appearance for the club this season. The decision comes despite his return to training with the rest of the first-team group.
The breakdown of the Everton transfer has left Monaco continuing to look for a solution for the striker, while the club’s financial obligations remain a factor in its plans. A move to Saudi Arabia is among the possibilities because clubs there can still register players after the closure of the principal European transfer window.
Monaco had been prepared to part with Balogun for a fee of 46.5 million euros, but the proposed transfer ended when the player rejected the move following Everton’s concerns over his medical assessment. The failed deal has now been followed by Balogun’s omission from the club’s European plans.
The Conference League squad decision also comes before Monaco’s fourth Ligue 1 fixture against Paris Saint-Germain on 4 September. Balogun will not feature in that match, and he has yet to play for Monaco during the current campaign.
