FIFA U20 World Cup: Ghana defender Owusu Bempah draws valuable lessons from tournament experience
Ghana U20 were exciting at the World Cup

Ghana defender Joseph Owusu Bempah believes the team have drawn lessons from their failure at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Ghana, coached by Sellas Tetteh topped Group B with seven points after a draw with Austria and subsequent victories over Argentina and Panama.

But the new generation of the Ghana under-20s who were tipped to emulate the feat of the 2009 World Cup winning squad, fizzled out of the competition after a 0-3 thrashing by fellow Africans, Mali, at the knockout stage.

“We left with high expectations and started quite well but along the way, we fell off and couldn’t reach our target,” said team captain Bempah who lost his position to Kingsley Fobi after Ghana’s opening draw with Austria.

The Satellites failed to reach their minimum semifinal target but Bempah asserts the team have learnt a lot from the Under-20 World Cup that will help their development.

“It was a good tournament full of lessons for us. We have learnt a lot that I believe will help our progression as young footballers,” the right-back said.

Mali who eliminated Ghana at the round of 16, have progressed to the last four alongside fellow Africans Senegal.
