Nigeria begin their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign on Monday with a demanding Group F fixture against Spain at ArcelorMittal Park in Sosnowiec.
Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 GMT, with the Falconets aiming to make a strong start as they continue their pursuit of a first title in the competition. Nigeria have twice reached the final, in 2010 and 2014, but have never lifted the trophy.
The West African side have appeared at every edition of the tournament since it was launched in 2002. Their consistent presence has established them as one of the competition’s most experienced teams, although they have been unable to complete their run to the final with a championship victory.
For the 2026 edition, the target is clear: Nigeria want to claim the crown that has eluded them for more than two decades. That ambition will be tested immediately against a Spain side also expected to challenge deep into the tournament.
Nigeria’s preparations included two friendly matches in Poland. They defeated the host nation 1-0 before drawing 1-1 with the Republic of Korea. Mary Mamudu scored in both games, giving coach Moses Aduku and his staff an encouraging attacking reference point ahead of the tournament.
The matches also gave the squad an opportunity to adjust to the local conditions and allowed the coaching team to refine its plans before the competitive action began.
Spain, however, present a significant opening challenge. They have a strong pool of emerging talent and are seeking a second FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title. Their coach, David Aznar, has made clear that his team intends to “compete for everything”.
Nigeria are determined to match that ambition. Aduku has told his players to treat the meeting with Spain as if it were a final, underlining the importance attached to the opening fixture.
“We will approach the match like a final because we want to win,” he said.
A victory would give the Falconets an ideal platform in Group F and provide early momentum in a campaign that will also include matches against China and New Caledonia. The result could prove especially significant in a demanding group, where a positive opening performance would strengthen Nigeria’s position before their remaining fixtures.
The Falconets’ history offers both encouragement and added pressure. Their two previous final appearances show that Nigeria have the ability to compete at the highest level of the age-group tournament, but their failure to win either final remains a source of unfinished business.
That makes Monday’s encounter more than simply an opening game. Nigeria are seeking to begin their latest title campaign with a statement performance, while Spain will look to demonstrate why they are also regarded as serious contenders.
