Abderrahmene Boungab is beginning to fulfil the promise that had long been recognised within ES Setif, with a full pre-season alongside the senior squad and a recent call-up to Rafik Saifi’s Algeria Under-23 team pointing to a significant step forward in his development.
The attacking midfielder is ranked 21st in this season’s #TalentsAlgeriens series, which follows 25 young players to watch in Algeria’s Ligue 1. The selection is necessarily subjective and takes into account more than natural ability, including each player’s potential, expected role at club level and what the 2026/27 season could represent in their progress.
Boungab was born on 25 May 2006 and comes from Amoucha in the Setif wilaya. Those who followed ES Setif’s youth teams had been convinced for some time that he would eventually reach the first team. His route, however, was far from straightforward.
A knee problem, slower physical development and a series of other obstacles delayed his move into senior football. It was only towards the end of last season that his qualities began to show consistently at professional level. Since then, the signs have become increasingly encouraging: he completed a full preparation period with the first team, scored in friendly matches and was selected for the Algeria Under-23 squad.
Mourad Bellal knows Boungab’s journey particularly well. The former ES Setif youth coach also worked with several players who later became important figures for the club, including Abdelmoumene Djabou and Akram Djahnit.
Speaking to Africafoot, Bellal made clear the high regard in which he holds his former player. He also believes Boungab did not always benefit from the most favourable circumstances during his development. That assessment reflects the feeling among those around the midfielder that it was only a matter of time before an opportunity opened up.
That opportunity began to arrive late last season. Milutin Sredojevic had started to involve Boungab before Lotfi Amrouche took charge, although the circumstances were not ideal for introducing large numbers of young players into the team.
Sofiane Benkhelifa, a coach and youth developer who has worked with USMA and Olympique Akbou, joined the ES Setif staff under Amrouche. He recalled the process by which the coaching team began to examine Boungab more closely.
A creative midfielder with range
Within Setif’s football community, Boungab’s performances have even prompted comparisons with Malik Zorgane, one of the most significant figures in the history of ES Setif during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
It would be premature to compare their careers. Boungab is only starting out in professional football. But the comparison reflects the qualities some observers believe they see in him: a midfielder who can read situations early, select the right pass and improve the players around him.
Bellal portrays him primarily as a player whose instincts are directed towards collective football. Boungab is not simply a distributor, though. His qualities also allow him to contribute beyond the final pass.
Benkhelifa, meanwhile, sees a player capable of operating at different heights in midfield. That versatility could prove valuable at senior level. Boungab has the technical ability to play close to the forwards, while his understanding of the game allows him to begin moves from deeper positions and support attacks from there.
His recent inclusion in the Algeria Under-23 squad has reinforced the belief that he can develop into an important player for ES Setif. Even so, his development remains unfinished, and those who know him best are not attempting to hide the areas in which he still needs to improve.
Imad Bella, a former ES Setif player who is now an agent and remains close to the club’s environment, identifies two particular areas requiring further work.
Boungab’s physical history partly explains the delay in his progress. He suffered a knee problem while still playing in the youth ranks and required surgery. Bellal believes his body is now responding better to the demands of higher-level football.
For the first time, Boungab is approaching a professional season having completed a full preparation programme and without immediately needing to make up a physical deficit.
Bellal also describes him as a disciplined young player who does not need constant correction. He is similarly unconcerned about Boungab dealing with the pressure that comes with beginning a career at a demanding club such as ES Setif.
Now 20, Boungab is entering his second season as a professional. His talent is no longer in question; the next challenge is whether his body, after years of setbacks, can withstand the demands of a full campaign and justify the expectations of those already projecting him as ES Setif’s next number 10.
