Borussia Dortmund came from two goals behind to beat TSG Hoffenheim 3-2 away from home, extending their dominant recent record against the hosts.
Hoffenheim had appeared in control for much of the match and looked set to secure a first win of the season after building a two-goal lead. However, a rapid Dortmund revival in the second half transformed the contest before an own goal completed a dramatic turnaround three minutes from time.
The result continues Hoffenheim’s difficult run against Die Borussen, with their record in the fixture now standing at one win, three draws and nine defeats.
Hoffenheim had been aiming to recover from their opening-day defeat by FC Koln and started with far greater authority. Dortmund were pinned back for long periods during the opening half, although Gregor Kobel kept the visitors level.
Adam Hlozek provided the first serious threat when he created room just outside the penalty area, but his powerful half-volley went narrowly wide of the near post.
Kobel was tested more severely shortly before the half-hour mark. Tim Lemperle used a clever backheel to unlock the Dortmund defence, sending Adam Daghim through on the left. Daghim’s angled effort appeared destined for the bottom corner, but Kobel produced an excellent save to turn it wide.
Dortmund were already struggling to gain a foothold when Niko Kovac was forced to reorganise his team following an injury to Filippo Mane. Hoffenheim continued to apply pressure and finally made the breakthrough just before half-time.
Leon Avdullahu found the top corner with a superb curling strike from 25 yards, giving the home side a deserved lead at the interval.
The hosts carried that momentum into the second half and doubled their advantage after 54 minutes. Lemperle showed determination to win possession from Joane Gadou in his own half before driving towards goal. His shot took a substantial deflection, looping over Kobel and into the net.
At that stage, Hoffenheim appeared to have the match under control. Dortmund, though, suddenly found an attacking spark on the hour and scored twice in quick succession.
Waldemar Anton began the revival by winning the ball high up the pitch. Rather than attempt to finish himself, he calmly squared it to Serhou Guirassy, who lifted a composed dink over the goalkeeper.
Guirassy then became provider. He released substitute Fabio Silva, who produced an outstanding angled finish to bring Dortmund level and stun the home support.
The equaliser set up an open and increasingly tense finale, with both teams searching for the decisive goal. Dortmund found it with only three minutes remaining.
Ethan Nwaneri powered forward and sent the ball across the face of goal. Albian Hajdari was unable to deal with the delivery and turned it into his own net, completing Dortmund’s stunning comeback.
The defeat leaves Hoffenheim facing a frustrating beginning to the campaign. They have now lost consecutive matches by 3-2 after leading in both games.
Dortmund, meanwhile, have won their first two matches and sit joint top of the table.
