According to legal sources, a defamation lawsuit launched by France coach Didier Deschamps against Manchester United great Eric Cantona was dismissed by the Paris court of appeal on Monday.

After Cantona accused Deschamps of racial discrimination in his selection of players for the 2016 European Championship, Deschamps filed a lawsuit against him.

Cantona stated that Deschamps had passed over Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa because to their "north African roots."

In December 2020, a Paris court deemed the lawsuit invalid for procedural reasons.

It claimed that the complaint's wording did not adequately identify the defamation matter.

Deschamps challenged the first verdict, but the court of appeals upheld the earlier decision. Deschamps' legal options in France have already been exhausted.

"Mr Eric Cantona, who has always taken responsibility for what he's said in the past, appreciates this result which puts an end to a procedure that he thought unjustified," Cantona's legal team said in a statement following Monday's judgment.
