Derby County Appoint Steve McClaren as Manager for the Second Time

"?Derby County have officially appointed Steve McClaren as their new manager, succeeding Nigel Pearson after the former Hull and Leicester boss left his position by mutual consent last week.


For McClaren, who also worked at Derby as an assistant coach in the 1990s, it marks a return to the iPro Stadium a little over a year after leaving the club to take over at Newcastle. The 55-year-old has signed a relatively short-term contract that runs to the end of next season.


Under his previous leadership, Derby contested the 2014 Championship playoff final.

Describing himself as "excited to be back", McClaren told DCFC.co.uk, "I have a great affiliation with the club, having been here on three previous occasions, and I am really delighted at the prospect of finishing what we started back in September 2013.


"I regret how my time at Derby ended back in 2015 and I am very motivated to put things right for the club and our supporters. My ultimate aspiration remains exactly what it was before, to take Derby County back to the Premier League."

Chief executive Sam Rush said, "When we sat down as a board to begin the process of appointing a new manager it was apparent, as the architect of our style of football, that Steve was a prime candidate."


The club has additionally confirmed that Chris Powell and Kevin Phillips will keep their places as assistant manager and first-team coach respectively. Former Swiss international Pascal Zuberbuhler will also stay on as goalkeeping coach.
