Crystal Palace came from behind twice to defeat Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage in a dramatic London derby, with their left-sided players producing all three of the visitors’ goals.
The match was part of Saturday’s action in the third round of the English championship, and Fulham made the quicker start in front of their home supporters.
King opened the scoring after 11 minutes. He carried the ball forward before attempting a shot from distance, which took a deflection and wrong-footed the goalkeeper on its way into the net.
Palace responded as the first half progressed and levelled in the 35th minute. Mitchell found space on the left, near the corner of the six-yard box, and struck towards the near post. The effort beat the goalkeeper to bring the visitors back into the game.
Fulham regained the lead shortly before the interval. Palacios reacted quickest to a loose ball and converted from the edge of the six-yard area, prompting him to be surrounded by his team-mates as the hosts restored their advantage.
Palace refused to fade after the break and equalised again nine minutes into the second half. Mitchell scored his second goal of the afternoon in an unusual fashion, as the ball struck his leg during a crowded passage of play and deflected into the net.
The Fulham goalkeeper was still on the ground after the earlier deflected effort, while a defender attempted to intervene with a sliding challenge but was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
Mitchell’s afternoon ended after his brace, with Chilwell replacing him on the left in Palace’s system featuring three central defenders. The substitute then completed the visitors’ comeback in the 77th minute.
Chilwell anticipated another rebound inside the penalty area and finished accurately to put Palace ahead for the first time in the match. His goal underlined the importance of the visitors’ left flank, with the two wing-backs responsible for all three of Palace’s strikes.
Fulham pushed for a late equaliser, but Palace held on to secure a 3-2 victory away from home.
The result gave Crystal Palace their first points of the campaign. The Eagles had suffered defeats in their opening two matches, but now have three points from three rounds.
Fulham, meanwhile, remain without a point. The hosts led twice at Craven Cottage but were unable to protect either advantage, as Palace’s response after the break turned the derby in their favour.
