Cristiano Ronaldo has praised Lionel Messi’s remarkable international career, sending a heartfelt message to his long-standing rival after more than two decades spent together at the top of world football.
The Portugal forward used social media to recognise the Argentina captain’s achievements and longevity with the national team. Ronaldo and Messi have shared one of football’s greatest rivalries, repeatedly meeting on the biggest European and international stages.
“Leo, so many years defending your country and a story that will remain forever engraved,” Ronaldo wrote on his official accounts.
The message was a personal acknowledgement from one eight-time Ballon d’Or winner to a player with whom he has competed throughout their careers for individual and team honours.
Ronaldo ended his post with a warm expression of mutual respect: “You have all my respect for everything you have achieved with Argentina. A hug.”
The tribute was widely welcomed across the sporting world and underlined the esteem now shared by two players whose careers have defined the modern era of football.
