Cote d’Ivoire: Malick Yalcouye and Yann Gboho impress during international break

Published on: 05 October 2026

For Akale Kanga, Malick Yalcouye and Yann Gboho were among the main beneficiaries of Cote d’Ivoire’s latest international break, while Christ Tape also strengthened his case for further involvement with the Elephants.

Cote d’Ivoire recorded victories against Ghana and Somalia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers before losing to Cameroon in a friendly. The three matches gave manager Herve Renard an opportunity to assess a wide range of players and seek answers ahead of the next stage of qualification.

Renard rotated his squad extensively during the window, handing opportunities to several players. That willingness to test different options was one of the most significant features of the camp, according to former Cote d’Ivoire international Akale Kanga.

Yalcouye and Gboho make an impression

Kanga highlighted Malick Yalcouye as one of the players who enhanced his reputation. The Brighton midfielder’s performances suggested that his strong start to the season in England was not simply a temporary burst of form.

Yann Gboho was another positive feature for Kanga. The attacker stood out for his work rate and commitment, adding further competition in the attacking areas.

The displays from Yalcouye and Gboho could therefore increase the pressure on established options in the Ivory Coast forward line, with Renard now having more players to consider as he continues to shape his squad.

Christ Tape was also judged to have made progress during the break. The full-back was not described as spectacular, but his disciplined performances could help him establish a regular role in the rotation over time.

Caution over Ouattara

Kassoum Ouattara’s situation was viewed differently. Renard used him on the right side, although he usually plays on the left.

That change of position means Kanga believes it is too early to reach a firm conclusion about the player. Ouattara may need to be assessed again in his natural position before his prospects can be properly judged.

Not every player benefited equally from the international window. Patrick Zabi, Amadou Kone and, in particular, Rayan Fofana still have work to do if they are to reach the highest level of international football, according to Kanga.

His assessment was not presented as a definitive rejection of those players, but as a reminder of the demands involved in competing at international level.

Gambia tests await in November

Cote d’Ivoire’s next opportunity to measure the progress made during this camp will come in November, when they face Gambia on 11 and 15 November in the third and fourth rounds of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Both teams currently have six points after two matches. Renard’s experimentation will increasingly need to give way to a clearer pecking order, with the next gatherings expected to show which of the emerging options can establish themselves.
