Andreas Christensen made his 100th appearance for Barcelona as the Catalan club recorded a convincing victory over Rayo Vallecano in the third round of the Spanish championship.
The Denmark international played the full 90 minutes at centre-back, reaching the significant milestone in a match Barcelona marked with a comfortable result. The occasion gave Christensen a notable achievement to celebrate as he completed a century of appearances for the club.
Christensen joined Barcelona in 2022, when the team was managed by Xavi Hernandez. The defender featured more regularly during Xavi’s reign than he has under current manager Hansi Flick, with 74 of his 100 appearances coming during the two seasons in which Xavi was in charge.
His involvement has been more limited under Flick. Christensen played 24 matches across Flick’s first two seasons, before adding two more appearances in the current campaign. His full outing against Rayo Vallecano therefore took him to the landmark figure.
The 100-match total reflects Christensen’s time at Barcelona since moving to the Catalan club in 2022 and includes appearances made under two different managers. Although his opportunities have decreased in recent seasons, he retained his place for the third-round fixture and completed the match on the field.
Barcelona’s victory ensured the milestone was reached in positive circumstances, with the team beating Rayo Vallecano by a clear margin. Christensen’s contribution came as part of a defensive performance that allowed him to remain involved throughout the entire game.
The appearance also underlined the contrast between the defender’s first two seasons at Barcelona and his subsequent role under Flick. Of the century of matches, nearly three-quarters were played while Xavi led the side. The remaining 26 came during Flick’s time in charge, including the two matches Christensen has played in the current season.
For Christensen, the Rayo Vallecano fixture was consequently both a routine league appearance and a personal landmark. Having reached 100 matches for Barcelona, he has now recorded the milestone after four seasons connected with the club, with his total built across the managerial periods of Xavi Hernandez and Hansi Flick.
