Xabi Alonso says Chelsea captain Reece James will have “a lot of playing time as a midfielder”, highlighting the England international’s ability to operate both in defence and in the centre of the pitch.
The Chelsea head coach said he values James’ versatility, which allows the 26-year-old to contribute either on the flank of the defence or in midfield. Alonso’s comments underline the different ways he believes the captain can be used during the season.
James has featured in three matches for Chelsea in all competitions so far this campaign. He has not recorded a goal or an assist in those appearances.
Alonso’s assessment presents midfield as an important part of James’ role at Chelsea, rather than limiting the captain to his more familiar position on the right side of defence. The manager did not put a restriction on where James can contribute, instead stressing the benefit of having a player able to perform in more than one area of the team.
“He will have a lot of playing time as a midfielder,” Alonso said of James.
The remarks come as Chelsea prepare to face Arsenal away from home on 6 September. The fixture provides the immediate context for Alonso’s comments, with James available as a versatile option for the London club.
James’ ability to switch positions is central to the manager’s view of his importance. Alonso values the fact that the Chelsea captain can be selected on the edge of the defence or moved into midfield, giving the team another way to use him depending on the demands of the match.
Despite his involvement in three games this season, James has yet to make a direct contribution to a Chelsea goal. His appearances have nevertheless given Alonso the opportunity to assess how the captain can be deployed across different positions.
The manager’s message is that James’ midfield opportunities will not be limited. Alonso expects the player to receive substantial playing time in that role while retaining the capacity to perform in defence.
For Chelsea, the comments provide a clear indication of how Alonso views one of his key players. James remains the club captain, and his versatility gives the manager the choice of using him either defensively or centrally.
Chelsea’s next match is against Arsenal away on 6 September. It will be the latest occasion on which Alonso can decide whether to use James on the flank of the defence or in midfield, following the three appearances he has made in all competitions this season.
