Victory chasing Socceroo Kruse

Published on: 18 July 2019

Melbourne Victory are bidding to bring Robbie Kruse back for a second stint ahead of the new A-League season.

New coach Marco Kurz wants the 30-year-old forward to help boost his forward line, after last term's top scorer Kosta Barbarouses moved to rivals Sydney FC in the off-season.

Victory are also set to lose James Troisi after his contract expired.

Sources close to the club have confirmed they are in talks with the Australia international, who made 36 appearances for them between 2009-11.

He left Australia at that point to join Fortuna Dusseldorf, then spent four years with Bayer Leverkusen before moving to Vfl Bochum in 2017.

Kruse has played 75 times for the Socceroos, scoring five goals, and started the 2015 Asian Cup final when Australia lifted the trophy.

Victory have only 15 players signed up for next season, including marquee Ola Toivonen.

Meanwhile, Adelaide United have signed Curaçao international Michaël Maria on a two-year contract from USL Championship side Charlotte Independence.

He will link up again with Reds coach Gertjan Verbeek.

"I've worked with Gertjan twice before, first at Bochum and then when I was at FC Twente, and I've wanted to be his player again," he said. "He's taught me to be a positive, courageous, and attacking player that loves to have the ball and that's how I enjoy the game the most."

United director of football Bruce Djite said: "Michaël's ability to be deployed anywhere on the left side of the park, but also as a defensive midfielder, makes him very valuable to us."

Melbourne Victory are 5/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final.

The Victory are 16/5 to win the FFA Cup.
