Lingard outstanding as Man Utd cruise to victory

Jesse Lingard scored twice in Manchester United's 2-0 win against Swansea City in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Tuesday.

A match that was tepid from the opening whistle came to life just past the 20-minute mark. Marcus Rashford's neat flick from an Ander Herrera pass sprang Lingard, who dribbled into the penalty area and fired past Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

And Swansea, who along with Man United fielded an experimental side for the cup tie, responded to the goal from Jose Mourinho's team with a few quality chances of their own before half-time.

Sam Clucas curled a left-footed shot that just missed at the far post before Oliver McBurnie twice fired over the goal after 40 minutes as the visitors took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room.

Lingard doubled Man United's lead just before the hour, powering a header past Nordfelt from 15 yards away after Matteo Darmian picked him out in stride with a perfectly curled cross.

Youngster Axel Tuanzebe almost had United's third when the ball fell to him right in front of the goal following a corner, but the 19-year-old somehow managed to poke the ball over the crossbar from close range.

Substitute Tammy Abraham forced a save from Sergio Romero in the 76th minute, as the Chelsea loanee's curling right-footed shot was headed for the upper-right corner of the goal.

And Lingard nearly had a third on 81 minutes, but his left-footed shot from outside the area sailed over the bar as Man United saw out the result to advance to the fifth round.
