Carragher urges Alexander-Arnold return to Liverpool after calling Real Madrid move a ‘big mistake’

Jamie Carragher believes Trent Alexander-Arnold should return to Liverpool after describing the defender’s decision to join Real Madrid as a “big mistake”.

Alexander-Arnold, 28, left his boyhood club for Real Madrid last summer after a controversial transfer saga. The England international had established himself as a key player at Anfield, becoming the defender with the most assists in Premier League history, with 64.

His move to Spain has not gone as planned so far. Alexander-Arnold has started only three of his six LaLiga appearances this season, playing a total of 266 minutes.

Carragher says Liverpool have missed Alexander-Arnold’s creativity and would welcome him back, despite the criticism the former academy player received from supporters following his departure.

“I would bring him back,” Carragher said, as quoted by AS.

“He would get a lot of criticism, because I think he made a mistake. I think he made a big mistake going to Madrid. We (Liverpool) have certainly missed his creativity.”

The former Liverpool defender also suggested Alexander-Arnold’s position in the Real Madrid squad had become increasingly uncertain.

“At the moment, he is the third option at right-back,” Carragher said. “They are playing a midfielder, Federico Valverde, in that position; even in the Clasico, Denzel Dumfries, the starting right-back, came on ahead of him.”

Carragher added: “When you are the third option at a club, obviously they want you to leave.”
