Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has criticised the club’s poor start to the season, comparing the current team to Real Madrid’s star-studded Galacticos era of the early 2000s.
Carragher does not hold new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola responsible for the team’s struggles. Instead, the former Reds captain believes the problems stem from the club’s decisions in the transfer market.
He likened Liverpool’s current squad to the Real Madrid side assembled around Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo and David Beckham. Despite containing some of the biggest names in world football, that team ultimately failed to meet expectations over the longer term.
Carragher also highlighted the scale of Liverpool’s spending on transfers as part of his criticism.
Liverpool have won only one of their opening four Premier League matches and drawn the other three. The Reds are eighth in the table.
