Edo Queens produced a thrilling comeback to defeat defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their final group-stage match at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, securing a place in the semifinals, Nigeriasoccernet.com writes.
Despite falling behind 1-0 early in the match, with Melinda Kgadiete putting Sundowns ahead in the 28th minute, Edo Queens demonstrated resilience. Chioma Olise’s missed penalty in the 54th minute seemed to leave Sundowns with an advantage, but the Nigerian champions refused to give up.
In stoppage time, Emem Essien equalized, and just minutes later, substitute Mary Mamudu scored the match-winner. This dramatic turn of events ensured that Edo Queens topped Group B with seven points from three games, while Sundowns were eliminated along with CBE FC.
The victory also meant Egypt’s FC Masar, who triumphed over Commercial Bank FC of Ethiopia, finished second in the group.
