CAF CL: CAF appoints "Controversial" Tunisian Referee for Rivers United v Wydad AC

Published on: 12 October 2022

The odds may be against Nigeria's representative Rivers United, after the Confederation of African Football named controversial Tunisian referee Sadok Al-Salmi for their 2nd leg Champions League qualifying round tie against Wydad Casablanca of Morocco.

The Nigeria champions won the first leg match 2-1 at the Adokiye Amasiamaka Stadium last weekend and they are scheduled to travel to Morocco for the second leg this weekend.

Recall in April, Sadeq Selmi was punched and kicked after Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane reached the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Egypt's Al Masry.

The Tunisian referee was allegedly assaulted by an Al Mastry technical staff member following what was a fiery match.

The home team won the match 1-0 after converting a contentious penalty, advancing to the semifinals on away goals in a tie that ended 2-2.

Recall less than two weeks early under Sadeq al Salmi, Nigeria failed to qualify to the 2022 Qatar World Cup after drawing 1-1 with rivals Ghana Black Stars at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

According to the update from CAF, the Tunisian will be assisted by Al-Sadiq Al-Salmi, Ayman Ismail (first assistant referee) and Khalil Al-Hassani (second assistant referee).

Amir Al-Wasif will be the fourth referee for the match which will be monitored by the former Libyan international referee, Jamal Salem Ambia.

The second leg match is slated for Mohammed V Sports Complex on Sunday, October 16th.
