The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to host the U-17 West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B Championship, NigeriaSoccernet.com can report.

As gathered from Punch, this endorsement followed a thorough inspection of the stadium by CAF and WAFU representatives on Monday.

The facility passed key benchmarks for hosting international matches, covering pitch quality, safety, infrastructure, seating, and other essential services.

Leading the inspection was WAFU Executive Director Philip Chare, joined by Ogun FA Chairman and NFF board member Ganiyu Majekodunmi.

Both officials commended the stadium’s modern upgrades, citing its “advanced security systems, upgraded locker rooms, a fully equipped medical center, dedicated media zones, and high-capacity floodlighting.”

Wasiu Isiaka, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Sports Development, celebrated the development, calling it “a milestone achievement for the state and a validation of its investment in sports infrastructure.”

He noted that Ogun State had previously hosted the National Sports Festival and international friendlies, adding that more events are lined up.

“We are now preparing to host the African U-18 and U-20 Athletics Championships, followed by the U-17 WAFU B tournament,” he said.

“These milestones show that our objectives are being achieved,” Isiaka stated confidently.

He also pointed out the larger impact of CAF’s approval on Nigeria’s sporting reputation.

“This is not just a win for Ogun State, but for Nigeria as a whole,” he emphasized.

“It reinforces Nigeria’s position on the continental map in terms of sports infrastructure.”

Isiaka concluded by saying the recognition “underscores our commitment to meeting global standards.”

This approval positions Abeokuta as a rising hub for international youth sports.

It also reaffirms Nigeria's growing capacity to host major events on African soil.
