Match Report: Asante Kotoko 0-3 Berekum Chelsea- Defending champions humiliated at home
Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko were handed a thumping 3-0 defeat by Berekum Chelsea in their Premier League match played on Sunday.

The champions slumped to another low before their ever demanding home fans with Chelsea’s Kofi Owusu most of the damage with a brace.

Kotoko were however the ones to have started the game on a bright note but once more again lacked the finishing required to convert the chances they created earlier on.

Chelsea took control of the game at the half-hour mark and never looked back thereafter.

Kofi Owusu gave the visiting Blues a deserved lead in the 30th minute – one they guarded very well into recess.

Owusu returned late in the second half to score again to put the result beyound any shred of doubt.

Asiwome Fumador scored late on to put a gloss on the excellent performance of Chelsea as they run away from the dreaded Baba Yara Stadium with all three points.

In 1970, Kumasi Corners Stone beat Kumasi Asante kotoko 3-0 .Kotoko lost their next home game at Siwudu park at cape coast against Dwarfs. NOTE; That was the first game for Robert Mensah since joining kotoko after the 1969 league. The first choice goalie for kotoko was Essel Mensah, a millitary man, was on Africa Millitary games duty at Burkina Faso and Robert Mensah had the opportunity to be in post. And on 2nd December 1973, Corners thumped kotoko 3-0 in a home game for Corners...The likes of Adamu and Agyemang Badu, the soccer articulator featured for corners. This was an outstanding match after kotoko has trashed AS Vita club 4-2 in kumasi..Africa cup finals but lost the return leg at 20th may stadium 3-0 in kinshasha In 1971, Akotex from Akosombo got promotion to the then division league and their home grounds was at Somanya in the Eastern Region. Akotex came to kumasi for the first leg to beat kotoko by 3-0 at The then Kumasi sports stadium. Some of the kotoko players were; Essel Mensah, Akua Amoah Boaterng, Ohene Brenya, Bobie Ansah,Yaw Sam, Abukari Gariba, Ben Acheampong, Malik Jabir and Osmanu Olando while Nafiu, Yaw Mark, Yaw Fred, Boadu, Michelle, Kankam and the likes also featured for Akotex. Remember it was on that return match at Somanya that Robert Mensah was not in camp but was at Tema and Robert saw two young men, namely Nana Ahwere and Isaac Melfah engaged in a fight. Robert went between them in his bid to seperate the two men but in the process, Melfah who broke one of the bottles to stab his opponent rather ended up stabbing Robert in the Stomach, who fell on the broken bottle, with the other end of it still stuck in his stomach. That was 30th October 1971 and died on 2nd November 1971.And that time kotoko was having a champions league semi finals against Great Olympics. NB. Chelsea has equalled that 44 year record since Akotex in 1971 after also thrashing kotoko 0:3 at the Kumasi Sports Stadium now Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
