Panthere Sportive du Nde made an impressive start to their continental campaign as they led Rayon Sports 1-0 at half-time in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie.
Valentin Beo Bato scored the only goal of the opening period with a spectacular overhead kick after 14 minutes at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Omnisport Stadium in Cameroon.
The home side began the match with purpose and quickly put pressure on Rayon Sports’ defence. Their positive approach was rewarded when a fast-moving attack created the opportunity for Beo Bato to produce a moment of individual brilliance.
The Panthere Sportive du Nde forward met the move with an acrobatic effort that flew past the Rayon Sports goalkeeper, sending the stadium into celebration and giving the Cameroonian club an early advantage.
It was a high-quality finish in a competitive opening to the match, and it reflected the hosts’ sharper start. Panthere Sportive du Nde had applied immediate pressure in an effort to unsettle their opponents and find a way through the Rwandan defence.
Rayon Sports, a club from Kigali, responded by trying to retain more possession after falling behind. The visitors sought to regain control of the game and create the conditions for an equaliser, but they struggled to turn their possession into clear opportunities.
Panthere Sportive du Nde maintained a disciplined defensive shape and kept their lines compact. That organisation limited the space available to Rayon Sports in the attacking area and prevented the visitors from posing a sustained threat in front of goal.
Despite the intensity of the contest, the home side protected their lead through the remainder of the first half. Rayon Sports were unable to find a decisive opening before the interval, leaving Panthere Sportive du Nde in front at 1-0.
The result at the break gives the Cameroonian side a valuable platform for the second half of the first-leg meeting. Beo Bato’s goal remains the difference between the teams after an opening 45 minutes in which Panthere Sportive du Nde were more effective in the decisive moments.
The match forms part of the first preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, with Panthere Sportive du Nde beginning their continental campaign at home against Rayon Sports. The Cameroonian club will now look to preserve their advantage, while the Rwandan visitors must find a way to break through a well-organised defence.
