Florian Wirtz’s underwhelming start at Liverpool could lead Bayern Munich to consider a fresh attempt to sign the Germany international at the end of the season.
Wirtz rejected Bayern Munich in favour of a move to Anfield last year, but the 23-year-old is now being discussed as a potential option for the German champions.
The midfielder joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £116 million, yet he has struggled to show the consistency expected of one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history. His latest performance, in Liverpool’s match against Fulham, provided another indication that he has not yet reached his best level.
Bayern’s view of Wirtz has not changed, despite his difficult adaptation to English football. Sources say the club would be interested in exploring a deal if he becomes available when the campaign ends.
Their possible renewed pursuit is significant because Bayern Munich made a major effort to sign Wirtz in 2025. They were ready to commit substantial funds and initially believed they had a strong chance of persuading him to move to Munich.
Wirtz ultimately made it clear that Liverpool was his preferred destination. That decision allowed Liverpool to open negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen before completing the £116 million transfer.
Arne Slot was an important influence in convincing Wirtz to choose Anfield. The player later recognised that presentations from the Dutchman had helped persuade him Liverpool represented the right next stage of his career.
However, the situation has not developed as either the player or the club would have hoped. Slot has since departed, while Wirtz has found it difficult to produce the regular high-level performances Liverpool expected after investing such a significant fee.
His display at home against Fulham at the weekend added to concerns that he has yet to settle fully or make a sustained impact.
Wirtz has made five appearances this season, providing one assist but scoring no goals. New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola now faces the task of finding a system and role that can help the midfielder reproduce his best football consistently.
That uncertainty makes Bayern Munich’s long-standing admiration particularly relevant. The club have already seen Wirtz excel in the Bundesliga and understand the level of financial commitment that would be needed, having pursued him strongly before he opted for Liverpool.
There is no current indication that Liverpool are looking to sell Wirtz. Bayern Munich, however, are prepared to remain patient and monitor the situation from the background.
