Bayern Munich backed to extend winning run as in-form Michael Olise visits Augsburg

Bayern Munich travel to WWK Arena to face Augsburg on Friday, looking to claim a fourth successive Bundesliga victory and close the gap on leaders Borussia Dortmund. The hosts, meanwhile, are aiming to recover from a second straight defeat after the international break.

Augsburg began the 2026-27 campaign strongly under Manuel Baum, beating Schalke 04 3-0 in their opening match before a 4-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt. However, their momentum has since declined.

They were held to a 2-2 draw by Bayer Leverkusen on 12 September after Michael Gregoritsch’s two goals were cancelled out by Patrik Schick’s 89th-minute equaliser. Augsburg then surrendered a two-goal lead in a frustrating 3-2 defeat by Werder Bremen.

Baum’s side remain fourth in the Bundesliga, but their European position is under pressure. They have seven points, the same total as Bayer Leverkusen, Mainz, Elversberg and Werder Bremen.

Their defensive problems were also evident in a 2-2 friendly draw against second-tier Hertha Berlin earlier this month. It was the third consecutive match in which Augsburg had conceded twice.

Bayern are unbeaten in all competitions this season but sit second, two points behind Borussia Dortmund, who have won their first four league matches. Vincent Kompany’s team have won six of their seven matches in 2026-27, with their only failure to win coming in a 0-0 draw against promoted Schalke on 5 September.

Augsburg are the only team to have beaten Bayern in their past 47 Bundesliga matches, winning 2-1 at Allianz Arena on 24 January. Bayern have otherwise won seven of their past eight meetings with Augsburg.

Augsburg will be without 19-year-old central defender Noahkai Banks, who suffered a knee ligament injury while with Germany’s youth team during the international break. Calvin Brackelmann, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Chrislain Matsima are expected to play in a back three, with Marius Wolf and Hennes Behrens operating as wing-backs.

Tim Breithaupt remains unavailable with a toe injury, while striker Steve Mounie is also expected to miss the match. Han-Noah Massengo and Fabian Rieder should anchor midfield, with Alexis Claude-Maurice and Robin Fellhauer supporting Gregoritsch.

Bayern are without Jamal Musiala, who suffered a thigh muscle tear during the warm-up before Germany’s match against the Netherlands. As he continues his recovery through individual training, Ismael Saibari could play as the number 10, alongside Michael Olise and Luis Diaz behind Harry Kane.

The suggested selections are Bayern to win with both teams scoring at 1.73, Olise to score at 1.95 and Diaz to score at 2.05.

Possible line-ups

Augsburg: Dahmen; Brackelmann, Gouweleeuw, Matsima; Wolf, Massengo, Rieder, Behrens; Fellhauer, Claude-Maurice; Gregoritsch.

Bayern Munich: Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Tah, Davies; Pavlovic, Kimmich; Olise, Saibari, Diaz; Kane.
