Bayer Leverkusen Could Cash In on Victor Boniface Despite Long-Term Deal

Published on: 24 November 2024

Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly considering offers for Nigerian forward Victor Boniface during the next summer transfer window,  Nigeriasoccernet.com can report.

The 23-year-old, who joined Leverkusen in the summer of 2023, has impressed since his arrival but is now viewed as a valuable asset who could help fund the club's squad overhaul.

Boniface made an immediate impact in his debut season, scoring 14 goals and providing nine assists, a performance that earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award. Despite signing a five-year deal, Leverkusen may part ways with the striker for an estimated fee of €30 million. This decision aligns with the club’s aim to reinvest in other areas of the squad to remain competitive in both domestic and European competitions.

Injury Struggles Hamper Progress

Boniface has faced a series of fitness challenges since the latter half of last season. His current thigh injury, sustained while on international duty with Nigeria, marks another setback. This injury is expected to keep him sidelined until 2024, with Leverkusen coach Xavi Alonso confirming his absence for the remainder of the year. Alonso shared in a recent press conference:

“He suffered a small injury to his thigh. We hope he’ll play again this year, but it depends on his recovery. We’ll evaluate his progress, but he won’t be out for 6-8 weeks.”

These recurring fitness issues have limited Boniface's availability, raising questions about his long-term reliability for both club and country.

Mixed National Team Performance

While Boniface has excelled at the club level, his performances for Nigeria's Super Eagles have been less impactful. Despite participating in all their matches during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers, he failed to register a single goal. This inconsistency has attracted criticism from fans and analysts, especially given his impressive club statistics, which include 8 goals in 15 appearances across all competitions this season before his injury.

Market Potential and Future Prospects

Despite his recent struggles, Boniface remains a highly sought-after talent, with several European clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. His ability to perform at the highest level, coupled with his young age, makes him an attractive prospect for teams looking to bolster their attacking options. If a transfer materializes, it will not only benefit Leverkusen financially but could also provide Boniface with a fresh start to reaffirm his potential.

Leverkusen's willingness to sell their star striker indicates their proactive approach to squad management and long-term planning. Boniface's future, however, will hinge on his recovery and ability to consistently deliver on the pitch.
